Staff Shout Out: Mujahid Ahmed

‘When I walked into the KYDS Lindfield office for the first time, with its colourful walls and buzzing activity, I felt like I was entering a kaleidoscope full of hyperactive bees. The combination of the team’s witty humour and obvious passion for ensuring the best outcomes for their clients was incredibly alluring.’

Mujahid Ahmed is a senior Clinician at KYDS.  His other passion is football (soccer), and he brings his boots to work every day just in case the young person wants to go for an ‘emergency’ kick outside!

Since first arriving in Australia from Sudan in 2001, Mujahid has revelled in observing the differences between the two countries, discovering new things to add to the list almost every day.

‘The first example that comes to mind was when I was first invited to a barbeque where the host requested that the guests “bring a plate”. For a long time after, I wondered why people stared at me funny for walking in with an empty plate, rather than at the host, who invited a group of people over when they themselves couldn’t even afford basic crockery!’ Mujahid recalled.

A provisional psychologist, Mujahid has worked with young people from marginalised communities across Australia in both counselling and community development roles. His experience also includes working in the humanitarian aid sector with refugees and forced migration both in Australia and overseas, including working with victims of torture in offshore refugee detention in Nauru and PNG. His passion is to improve equity and access to mental health services for marginalised young people and challenge the stigmas around seeking help for mental health conditions.

Mujahid reflects on his journey with KYDS this year.

Eight months on, the unwavering commitment and dedication of the KYDS team continues to be a stark reminder to Mujahid that although many of us wake up dreaming of changing the world that day, at KYDS there is an unspoken rule that changing the world in a way that means anything to anyone and improves their life for the better, takes more time and effort than most people have the stomach for, and almost never happens at once.

‘KYDS is there for its clients for the long haul. The resilience and perseverance of the young people that KYDS supports, who often have the whole world telling them to move, is inspiring. Instead, they seem to always plant their feet in the ground like a tree, stare the world back in the eye, and say, “No, you move”.
